Artist Statement

My painting practice focuses on still life, landscape and figurative work and my passion for colour and semi abstraction is a huge influence. Inspired by the cut-out period of Matisse’s later years, I have begun to experiment with decorative forms of shape and pattern to freely emphasise the rhythms found in nature. To this end, exploration with collage and mixed media studies has provided fertile ground where the tension both within and between objects can be explored, and rhythms of negative and positive patterns reveal themselves. With each painting I hope to capture that magnetic element of emotional response.

I am never without my sketchbook to capture a visual record of my travels and the development of my initial sketches takes an exploratory and intuitive approach. I prepare my own canvases to make sure I’m happy with the surface texture and mostly paint alla prima as the planning stage is quite considered. Experimenting during the early stages and allowing myself the freedom to try new ideas has been a wonderful rediscovery of the process itself. My strongest influences have been Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse, Francis Cadell, Richard Diebenkorn, Alberto Morrocco and contemporary artist Barbara Rae.
